HeatShield Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Crown Repair: The Puyallup Owner’s Guide

HeatShield crown repair in Puyallup typically runs $890-$1,450 installed, depending on crown size and whether the flue interface needs refractory work alongside it. We stock HeatShield-compatible crown repair materials on our trucks and can usually complete the job in a single visit once we’ve run the camera and written the scope. Most Puyallup homeowners discover the problem during a routine sweep or when they notice water staining on the ceiling near the fireplace after our wet winters.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield’s crown repair system isn’t model-locked to a specific fireplace insert or stove line. It’s a flue-top application: the refractory compound is troweled over the existing concrete crown to seal cracks, restore slope, and shed water properly. What matters is crown diameter, flue tile count, and whether you have a single flue or a multi-flue chimney cap situation.

We see the most HeatShield crown calls in Puyallup on homes built between 1975 and 1995, especially in the South Hill corridor where the original concrete crowns were poured flat or with inadequate overhang. To identify your setup, we measure crown width, note flue tile OD (outer diameter), and check for existing HeatShield application. A prior HeatShield job will show the tan-colored refractory surface with the manufacturer’s stamp near the flue edge.

Level Two Chimney Puyallup is an independent service provider, not affiliated with HeatShield. We source HeatShield materials through Haven’s buying network alongside DuraFlex and Gelco products. For crowns with minor cracking and intact structural concrete, HeatShield’s Cerfractory foam and resurfacing slurry is the right call. If the crown is spalled through to the rebar or separating from the brick course, we quote a full pour instead.

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing
  • Water stains on the ceiling near the chimney breast. A failed crown lets water migrate down the flue chase, and in Puyallup’s 40+ inches of annual rainfall, that shows up as brown rings on drywall within a season. The crown’s slope has flattened or cracked enough that water pools instead of shedding.
  • Efflorescence (white powder) on exterior brick below the crown. This is mineral salt left behind as water evaporates through the masonry. It means water is entering at the crown and moving through the wall system, not just running down the flue.
  • Cracks you can see from the ground, especially running parallel to the flue tiles. Thermal cycling in our wet Pacific Northwest climate opens hairline cracks into water channels. HeatShield’s original application may have been too thin at the edges, or the substrate continued to move after repair.
  • Loose or rusted chimney cap, or gaps between cap and flue tile. The crown is supposed to provide a solid base for the cap. When it crumbles, the cap sits uneven, gaps open, and rain enters directly. We’ve found squirrels nesting in these gaps on Puyallup homes near Bradley Lake Park.
  • Deteriorated mortar in the top two feet of the chimney. Water from a compromised crown soaks the brickwork below. If the top course is soft to a screwdriver probe while courses below are sound, the crown is the entry point, not general masonry failure.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Scope Price Range
HeatShield crown resurfacing, single flue, standard access $890-$1,150
HeatShield crown resurfacing with flue tile interface repair $1,100-$1,350
Multi-flue crown or steep roof access (12/12 pitch+) $1,250-$1,450
Full concrete crown replacement (spalled to rebar) $1,800-$2,400

What drives the range: crown square footage, number of flue penetrations to seal, roof pitch and access, and whether we need to rebuild the top course of brick before the crown goes on. Every quote is written before work starts, with the scope, the price, and the warranty on one page. Haven Standard Clause 1.

The installed price includes NFPA 211 Level 2 camera inspection, the HeatShield Cerfractory application or full pour as specified, flue tile sealing, and a documented photo record of before, during, and after. Warranty is 10 years on materials and workmanship for resurfacing, 20 years on full replacement crowns. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to all work.

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: look at the crown from the ground with binoculars for visible cracks, note any water stains inside, and verify your chimney cap is seated evenly. Do not climb the roof to inspect closely. Crown work happens at height, on a wet surface, often near power lines. The refractory materials themselves require proper surface prep and curing temperature control that a ladder and a hardware-store bucket won’t achieve.

We’ve been called to Puyallup homes where a homeowner’s DIY crown patch failed within 18 months because the substrate wasn’t cleaned and dampened per HeatShield’s spec, or because the application was too thin at the critical flue edge. The second repair costs more because we have to remove the failed material first. Camera goes in first. Price gets written down second. Work starts third.
