These caps used a strapping system that bolts through the crown, creating penetration points where sealant eventually dries and cracks. If your cap still has a Famco label, check the stamped model number on the underside of the lid. No label? Measure the flue tile outer diameter and the crown’s overall footprint. The CC-8 fits 8-inch round flues; the CC-12 fits 12-inch. • Water stains on the ceiling near the chimney breast. The crown’s concrete has cracked or the sealant at the flue tile interface has failed. Water follows the path of least resistance, which is usually down the outside of the flue liner and into the framing.
• White powdery residue on the exterior brick or stone below the crown. This is efflorescence, mineral salts left behind when water evaporates. It means water is getting behind the crown and migrating through the masonry, which accelerates freeze-thaw damage during Puyallup’s occasional hard freezes.

What goes wrong with DIY crown repair: the sealants sold at hardware stores are typically acrylic or basic silicone, rated for 2-3 years in our wet climate. We use elastomeric crown compounds formulated for chimney expansion and UV exposure, applied over a bonding agent. More critically, working on a chimney crown means working at height on a sloped surface, often near power lines. The concrete itself can be structurally unsound and collapse under weight. We don’t recommend owner repairs on crowns.
