• Smoke backdraft on startup. The damper plate isn’t sealing tightly against the frame, or it’s stuck partially closed. Cold air sinks down the flue overnight and creates a pressure block; smoke follows the path of least resistance back into your room.
• Rust flakes or debris falling into the firebox. The cast iron is degrading, or the galvanized frame is corroding from condensation. In Puyallup’s wet winters, we see accelerated rust where the damper sits below the roofline in homes without proper chimney caps.

Shine a flashlight up the flue from the firebox and look for obvious gaps, rust holes, or a plate that’s clearly off its pivot. What you cannot safely do is reach up past the smoke shelf to manipulate a 12-pound cast-iron plate while standing on a hearth, or attempt to remove the frame without supporting the masonry above it.
