Gelco Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Crown Repair: The Puyallup Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Gelco-compatible crown repair materials on most visits to Puyallup homes, with typical installed pricing running $340-$780 depending on crown size, flue count, and whether the wash is salvageable. Most Gelco crown jobs we book in Puyallup are completed same visit once the work is approved. Homeowners usually spot the problem after a heavy rain: water pooling on the firebox floor, white efflorescence blooming on interior brick, or a crown that looks intact from the yard but has hairline fractures running through the wash that let moisture seep straight to the flue liner.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco crowns are found most often on pre-fab metal chimneys and certain factory-built fireplace systems installed in Puyallup homes from the mid-1990s through the early 2010s, particularly the Gelco Ultra-Temp and Gelco Pro-Vent series. The identifying mark is a stamped Gelco logo on the crown skirt or a metal tag on the chase cover with a model prefix beginning “GUT-” or “GPV-“. If the tag is weathered, measure the crown footprint: Gelco units run 13″×13″ to 17″×17″ for single-flue systems, with multi-flue models scaling to 24″×36”.

We source Gelco crown repair materials through Haven’s buying network, procuring from Gelco, Olympia Chimney, and Famco to keep customer prices honest. OEM Gelco crowns are still available for most Ultra-Temp models, but we often recommend Olympia Chimney’s stainless crown assemblies for Pro-Vent systems where Gelco has discontinued the original SKU. The aftermarket units match Gelco’s 304 stainless spec and carry the same 20-year warranty. Mixing brands on the same chase is common and does not void system integrity, though we document the pairing in your photo record per Haven Standard Clause 4.

Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing
  • Water stains on the chase interior or ceiling near the fireplace. Gelco crowns rely on a sloped concrete wash over a metal form. When that wash cracks, water follows the flue liner down rather than shedding to the roof edge. In Puyallup’s wet winters, we see this accelerate after just two seasons of freeze-thaw cycling.
  • The crown surface looks “alligatored” or has map-cracking across the top. This is thermal shock damage from rapid temperature swings, common when a Gelco system vents a wood insert that gets burned hot then left to go cold overnight. The cracks are wider than they appear from the ground.
  • Pieces of concrete wash found in the yard or gutter below the chimney. Once the Gelco crown’s wash starts spalling, gravity does the rest. We pulled a 3-ounce chunk off a South Hill roof last March that had been letting water into the chase for two years.
  • Rust streaks down the chase siding or metal flashing. Gelco crowns include a galvanized or stainless skirt that seals to the chase top. When the crown fails, water hits that metal and runs, carrying iron oxide with it. The rust is a symptom; the crown is the disease.
  • Smoke smell in the home on humid days, even when the fireplace is cold. A failed Gelco crown lets moisture into the flue liner, where it reactivates old creosote deposits. The resulting odor is often misdiagnosed as a damper issue until we run the camera and find saturated liner walls.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range (Puyallup)
Single-flue Gelco crown repair (wash rebuild, existing form) $340-$480
Single-flue Gelco crown replacement (full assembly) $520-$680
Multi-flue Gelco crown replacement $620-$780
Chase cover replacement if rusted (add-on) $180-$290

The range depends on three things we check before quoting: crown footprint, whether the metal form beneath the wash is salvageable, and how many flue penetrations need sealing. Every Gelco crown repair we quote in Puyallup includes the NFPA 211 Level 2 camera inspection, a written scope with line-item pricing, the documented photo record under Haven Standard Clause 4, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise. We do not start work until you have that written price in hand.

A homeowner can safely check three things from the ground: whether water stains have appeared on the chase interior, whether concrete fragments are visible below the chimney, and whether the crown’s slope still sheds water or has flattened with age. Do not climb the chase. Gelco crowns sit at height on pre-fab systems with lightweight chase framing that will not support a ladder safely, and the concrete wash can crumble underfoot without warning.

The actual repair requires removing the old wash, assessing the hidden metal form for rust, forming and pouring new crown material with the correct slope and overhang, and sealing flue penetrations with proper high-temp sealant. We carry Gelco-compatible crown forms, stainless assemblies, and pourable crown mix on our Puyallup trucks. Camera goes in first. Price gets written down second. Work starts third. Call (253) 323-5667 when you’re ready to see what the camera shows.
