Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex caps are not universal. The critical match is between the cap’s inner diameter and your liner’s outer diameter, plus the termination style your system requires.

What we see in Puyallup:

• DuraFlex 316Ti - the heavier-duty alloy, usually 5½”, 6″, or 8″ outer diameter. The cap collar must seat over the liner without stretching or forcing. We carry 5½” and 6″ on the truck; 8″ we pull from our Haven network supplier in Tacoma same-day if needed.

• Rust staining on the chase or brickwork below the cap. DuraFlex 304 caps in Puyallup’s wet winters develop surface rust where the factory coating wears thin, usually at the fastener holes first. The stain is cosmetic early, but the underlying metal is thinning.
• Water in the firebox or damp ash smell days after rain. The cap’s mesh screen has separated from the crown, or the collar has lifted off the liner. In South Hill homes with steep-pitched roofs, we see this where wind-driven rain gets past a cap that looks fine from the ground.
• Mesh screen clogged or collapsed inward. Creosote buildup hardens in the screen mesh, especially with Class III glazed creosote - the brittle, tar-like deposit from slow, smoldering burns. The screen traps less debris, lets sparks through, and eventually the weight deforms the cap frame.
• Cap sitting crooked or visibly shifted after wind. The draw band or screw-tight collar has loosened. DuraFlex caps use a stainless band with a worm-gear clamp; if the clamp was overtightened during install, it creases the liner and the cap walks loose in the first strong storm off the Cascades.
• Animals or nesting material visible in the flue. The cap mesh is missing a section, or the wrong mesh size was installed - ¾” for standard, ⅝” for areas with smaller birds. We’ve pulled starling nests from Meridian-area chimneys where a ¾” mesh let the birds squeeze through.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check from inside: shine a flashlight up the flue and look for daylight where the cap should be, or water stains on the smoke chamber walls. That’s information, and it’s useful.

Here’s where DIY goes wrong. DuraFlex caps install at height, on a metal liner that may be 15-25 feet above grade, often on a roof pitch that doesn’t forgive a stumble. The draw band must be torqued enough to hold in wind but not so tight it deforms the liner collar - a creased 316Ti liner is a liner replacement, not a cap replacement. And if the liner has shifted or settled since original install, the cap won’t seat square without reworking the termination.
